Spizalauda Deva, Sykes. The Small Crown-crest.
This Lark was not at all uncommon between Gundalupet and Muddur
in Mysore, frequenting the grassy plains, cultivated land, edges
of roads &c. It rises to a good height in the air singing (but not
as high as A. gulgula). It has much the same habit as A. gulgula.
I found it usually in pairs. The following are the dimensions of
three specimens, two males and one female. The female measures slightly
smaller than the males, so I give them separately:-
Males.-Length, 5.7 to 6.05; expanse, 11.1; tail, 2.1 to 2.2; wing,
3.3 to 3.4; tarsus, 0.7 to 0.75; bill, from gape, 0.6; weight, 0.75
oz.
Female.-Length, 5.5; expanse, 10.4; tail, 1.85; wing, 3.1; tarsus,
0.8; bill, from gape, 0.6; weight, 0.7 oz.
Lower mandible, and upper mandible along commissure, legs, feet,
and claws, fleshy, sometimes more or less tinged with brown; irides
vary from sienna to cinnamon brown.
